Berisha says Albania’s EU Integration faces setback as scheduled intergovernmental conference is postponed

TIRANA, April 22  /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated today that the Albanian public is being kept in the dark about the cancellation of  the intergovernmental conference, which was scheduled for today according to the calendar.

In his address to the parliamentary group, Berisha emphasized that Albania’s European integration process is encountering significant obstacles, accusing the government of withholding transparency concerning the latest developments in Brussels.

“From the beginning of March until the present, a series of meetings and discussions have been organized in Brussels concerning Albania’s integration process,” stated Berisha.

He further emphasized that, “in all of these meetings, no agreement or consensus has been reached to approve the IBAR report, which is an interim, non-final report.”

“The Albanian public is not being informed that, in the six meetings held to date by the institution responsible for assessing this report, the requirements set for Albania have been steadily increasing. Moreover, the report, which was approved for Montenegro at the beginning of March, has neither been voted on nor reached consensus for Albania, despite both reports being discussed during the same meeting,” stated Berisha.

According to him, the Albanian public is being kept in the dark by the government and its lobbyists about the fact that the number of member states opposing the approval of the report has steadily increased.

Berisha stated that the Albanian public is being kept uninformed that the presidency modified the report and its requirements to align with the requests of EU member states regarding Albania. He also urged the EU member states, the European Commission, and the Presidency to ensure transparency in the integration process for the Albanian people.

Berisha stated that Albanians deserve full transparency and reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to Albania’s EU integration. He stressed that the process must be based on merit, not corrupt lobbying.
