TIRANA, April 20 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Monday his party would file legal action against police over the alleged use of banned means against opposition supporters during an antigovernment protest in Tirana last week.
Berisha was speaking after reporting to the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecution Structure (SPAK) in connection with the “Partizani” privatization case, under a court order requiring him to report to authorities.
In a statement, Berisha accused SPAK prosecutor Altin Dumani of irregular benefits linked to an apartment, saying he would file a complaint against him for “falsification.”
Addressing the treatment of protesters, Berisha alleged that police used “the most prohibited and illegal means” during a recent protest and said those detained had been held without evidence or proper legal documentation.
He added that the main opposition party would file a criminal complaint against the director-general of the State Police, Skënder Hita.
Berisha claimed police had used “a chemical agent he described as highly dangerous, alleging it could cause severe respiratory and cardiac effects.”
He said the opposition would continue protests, warning that demonstrations would intensify in the coming period.
