Authorities continue clearing illegal structures near schools to boost student safety

TIRANA, Feb 21 /ATA/ – Authorities across Albania are continuing efforts to clear illegal constructions around schools in a bid to improve safety for schoolchildren and students.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Saturday shared footage of interventions near the “Ndre Mjeda” and “Shejnaze Juka” schools in the northern city of Shkodra.

“We move forward without Saturday or Sunday breaks,” Rama said, referring to the demolition of structures built close to the schools “to guarantee students’ safety and return the space to the community.”

Launched in July 2025 as part of the “Urban Renaissance 2.0” programme, the initiative is designed as a permanent intervention and remains a priority for both local and central authorities.
The government has tightened territorial controls and strengthened penalties under the new Criminal Code targeting illegal construction.

Through the “My Public Space” online portal, citizens have so far reported 18,884 violations. Of these, 14,669 cases have been resolved, while 4,215 remain under review.
