TIRANA, Feb 14 /ATA/ – Albania’s Ombudsman Endrit Shabani has been elected president of the Mediterranean Ombudsmen Association (AOM), an intercontinental network focused on monitoring and promoting human rights standards.
According to a statement from the Ombudsman’s Office, Shabani was elected unanimously by the organisation’s board.
Founded as a strategic platform for the protection of human rights, the AOM brings together more than 30 ombudsman institutions from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Its members include countries such as France, Spain and Greece, as well as Morocco, Egypt, Israel and Jordan, forming a regional framework for overseeing governance standards and the rule of law across the Mediterranean basin.
Shabani’s appointment comes at what the statement described as a critical moment for the region, as challenges related to administrative accountability and the protection of civil liberties remain high on the global agenda.
“As president of AOM, I will coordinate the network’s efforts to strengthen the independence of ombudsman institutions and to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights vis-à-vis the executive branch across three continents,” Shabani said.
He added that the role positions Albania’s Ombudsman’s Office as a key actor in institutional diplomacy, giving Tirana a leading voice in shaping regional agendas on administrative justice and human rights protection.
