Berisha says Hague indictment against former KLA leaders is unfounded

TIRANA, Feb 9 /ATA/  – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha reacted Monday as prosecutors presented their closing statements at the trial against former political and military leaders of Kosovo, describing the charges as unfounded.

Berisha said the Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor’s Office had presented serious accusations and sought lengthy prison sentences for senior figures of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

While stressing that justice must ultimately rule on any crime and on anyone responsible, Berisha said that after years of judicial proceedings, no evidence, facts or documents had been presented to the public to substantiate concrete crimes committed by the accused.

He described the indictment as a repetition of what he called defamatory claims originating from Serbian ultranationalist propaganda, including allegations previously promoted by former Serbian prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević, notably accusations of organ trafficking allegedly taking in the territory of Albania.

Berisha called on the court not to allow what he described as propagandistic accusations to influence its decisions and urged that, in the name of the law, the innocence of Kosovo’s former political and military leaders be upheld.
