TIRANA, Feb 8 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Sunday called on citizens to join an opposition protest planned for February 10 in Tirana, urging them to “take the fate of Albania into their own hands.”
In a video message shared on social media, Berisha said the protest was aimed at defending the constitution and the rule of law, which he described as essential for Albania’s European Union integration.
“On Tuesday, each of you should protest and express your revolt in the opposition’s peaceful uprising, not only for yourselves, but for your children, for Albania, and more than ever, for this country’s European future,” Berisha said.
He also reacted to comments by Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding a Constitutional Court decision related to Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, accusing Rama of ignoring court rulings and undermining the rule of law.
Berisha said courts in Albania, the region and beyond had suspended not only ministers but also prime ministers.
“This appears to be the most unprecedented decision ever seen in the European Union, because the stance and decision of Edi Rama amount to the destruction of the rule of law through a coup from within the state,” Berisha said.
