OSCE Ambassador urges work on electoral reform commission

TIRANA, Feb 5 /ATA/ – The Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Michel Tarran, welcomed the work of the Special Parliamentary Commission on electoral reform on Thursday, saying it is vital to address outstanding issues in the country’s election law.

Speaking at an event organised by the Central Election Commission (CEC) and the OSCE Presence in Albania to mark World Election Day, Tarran urged lawmakers to continue cooperating in the commission to address the recommendations issued by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

“The ODIHR recommendations are aimed at improving the election law, and we encourage the work of the electoral reform commission. We hope it will start its work soon. Its work is very important because there are issues with the election law that, in our view, are not yet fully resolved. This is an ongoing recommendation from the ODIHR mission. It seems that this time the message has been understood by political parties,” Tarran said.

Asked about involvement in the political debate, he said the OSCE does not participate. “We do not get involved in political debates. But all political parties agree that the election law should be changed. We will assist in working toward this goal,” he added.
