State Police say officers injured during opposition protest

TIRANA, Jan 24 /ATA/ – Albania’s State Police said on Saturday that several police officers were injured during an opposition-led protest on Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard in central Tirana.

In a statement, police said the injuries occurred after protesters threw Molotov cocktails and pyrotechnic devices during the demonstration.

According to the police, the injured officers received first aid at the scene and their medical condition is being monitored by relevant services.

The incident took place after opposition leaders had finished addressing the crowd, police said, when a group of protesters lit flares and fireworks and threw Molotov cocktails toward police forces and the security perimeter surrounding the prime minister’s office.

Today’s protest was the second nationwide rally called by the opposition against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, following a demonstration held on Jan. 22.

Police forces had been deployed in advance to ensure public order and safety during the protest, the statement said.
