Berisha calls for sustained peaceful uprising to form caretaker government

TIRANA, Jan 17 /ATA/ The DP chairman, Sali Berisha, said on Saturday during a conversation with the citizens that the ruling majority has decided to deny the opposition even its limited procedural speaking rights in parliament.

Citing yesterday’s meeting of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, Berisha said parliament is, in effect, being overtaken and instrumentalized in a coup aimed at capturing the justice system.

He added that it is now up to the citizens.

“The citizens have the voice, and they must—and will—rise with all their strength to rescue Albania from a regime that is embezzling public money and resources at an unprecedented pace and pushing more Albanians to leave every day,” Berisha said.

Berisha said that the Democratic Party, its allies, and the citizens are determined to wage a final battle to remove the “narco-state” representatives and establish a caretaker government with two main objectives.

“First, to carry out electoral reform and hold national elections. Second, to implement territorial reform and organize local elections. And, of course, to put an end to any obstruction of the justice system’s actions and rulings,” he added.

When asked by citizens about the opposition’s next steps, Berisha said that the Democratic Party believes it is entirely possible to unseat the government through a sustained, peaceful uprising.

“A prolonged, peaceful uprising is vital and decisive for Albania’s future. We are making our preparations and believe that very soon citizens and opposition members will be ready for this action, process, and movement,” Berisha said.

The Democratic Party leader also addressed cooperation with the new opposition parties, stating that he supports Lapaj’s protest.
