Sako: Both Porto Romano pumping stations operating at full capacity

TIRANA, Jan 10 /ATA/ The Mayor of Durrës, Emiriana Sako, reported that both the new and old Porto Romano pumping stations are operating at full capacity.

In a statement to the media responding to opposition accusations, Sako said that if the pumping stations were not functioning, the situation would be far worse.

“Amid ongoing debate and accusations from the opposition questioning whether the pumping stations in Durrës are operating—or even if the city has a pumping station at all—the situation during these difficult days for everyone would be far worse if they were not functioning. Both the new and old Porto Romano pumping stations are operating at full capacity,” Sako said.

The Director of Rruga Enterprise, Alion Hysko, which manages the Porto Romano pumping stations, emphasized that “the new pumping station has been operational since the first day of rainfall, with 9 pumps in operation, discharging 40–50 m³ of water per second. Before the rains, the canal feeding water into the pumping station was at a level of 2.6 m. With the rainfall, the level rose to 6.5 m, which indicates that both the inflow and intensity were extremely high.”

Heavy rainfall in recent days in Durrës has caused damage to homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, dozens of residents affected by the floods have been protesting for the past two days in front of the Durrës Municipality, demanding proactive measures to improve the situation in the coastal city.
