PM Rama pledges full compensation to flood-affected citizens

TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Friday pledged full support for citizens affected by recent flooding across Albania, saying the government would meet all its obligations, including compensation for damaged homes and livestock.

Speaking at a meeting of the Inter-ministerial Committee for Civil Emergencies, Rama said the government would stand by those affected “with the same human, institutional and political responsibility” shown in past crises.

Rama said his government had inherited unpaid compensation liabilities from earlier floods, particularly in the northern Shkodra region, but had settled them in full. He added that investments in flood-protection infrastructure had helped limit damage despite worsening climate challenges.

“When we took office, we inherited outstanding flood-related debts, especially in Shkodra. We settled those obligations one by one and have not accumulated new debts of this kind,” Rama said.

He said flood damage had been reduced due to improved protective infrastructure, even as climate-related risks had intensified, adding that the government had also met major obligations arising from wildfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2019 earthquake.

“I want to assure those affected this time that we will meet every obligation to them, whether for housing or livestock,” the government head said.

Rama stated intensive work and round-the-clock mobilisation of state institutions and municipalities would continue nationwide until the severe weather situation was fully resolved.

He also urged lawmakers from the ruling majority to remain present in affected communities even after the immediate emergency has passed.
