Rama: Extreme weather is a consequence of climate change and should not be subjects for political-media debates

TIRANA, January 9 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama chaired today the meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Civil Emergencies from the Situations Room at the government building, where there was provided an update on the situation created by the weather severe conditions resulting from the extraordinary rainfall.

Rama stated that this is a prolonged and severe weather condition, which has not only affected Albania and is not related to any internal reasons or political-media debates.

“This weather condition has affected an entire area from Italy to Greece, from Montenegro to Kosovo, to Serbia and Croatia, from North Macedonia to Turkey. I say, there is the same cold, the same rain, the same snow and the same floods that have created a difficult situation for people”, said Rama.

Rama stressed that climate change does not only mean hotter summers, but also erratic seasons, as well as more frequent and severe weather extremes.

“More droughts and more fires, more floods, this is now the new framework of the climate we live in, which is no longer the climate we grew up with”, emphasized the prime minister.

In this context, Rama pointed at the irresponsible human behavior which further worsens the situation.

“While we continue to throw garbage on the streets or when we continue to set the forests on fire, the consequences of this climate change are even more severe. That’s what happened in Shkozet and beyond, where the flows of plastic collected from overflowing rivers blocked the large drainage canals”, Rama said. /gj.m/a.f/p.s./
