DP requests the government to declare a state of emergency in seven districts

TIRANA, Jan 8 /ATA/ The Democratic Party on Thursday requested that the government should declare the state of emergency for the districts of Durrës, Lezhë, Elbasan, Shkodër, Gjirokastër, Vlorë, and Fier, due to the damage caused by the flooding.

Gazment Bardhi, the Chairman of the Democratic Party’s Parliamentary Group, has urged the government to carry out “a thorough and objective assessment of the actual damages and to offer full financial compensation to the affected residents.
“We, the opposition members of the Albanian Parliament, believe that the conditions and criteria set forth in the law ‘On the approval of criteria and procedures for declaring a state of natural disaster ‘ have been fulfilled. Therefore, we call for the declaration of a state of natural disaster in the affected regions, specifically in the districts of Durrës, Lezhë, Elbasan, Shkodër, Gjirokastër, Vlorë, and Fier.”
“It is hard to comprehend why the Council of Ministers has yet to take action, leaving citizens uncertain about how to cope with this natural disaster. Failing to declare a state of natural disaster would obstruct full compensation for the affected residents and would represent a significant lapse in institutional responsibility,” the Democratic Party’s request reads.
Furthermore, the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party has requested the Speaker of the Parliament to take measures to ensure that the Council of Ministers brings the Parliament up to speed about the current situation, the risks involved, and the actions taken to manage the situation.
The letter has been addressed to the Parliament, the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Defense, and the National Agency for Civil Protection.
