TIRANA, Jan 6 /ATA/ – Flooding has affected around 800 homes in Albania’s coastal Durres region, forcing the evacuation of 180 residents, Defence Minister Pirro Vengu said on Tuesday after a meeting of the regional Civil Emergency Committee.
Vengu said emergency services and troops remain deployed on the ground, as heavy rainfall continues and the situation remains unstable. The worst-affected areas include Ish-Keneta, Shkozet and the former Nishtulla zone.
Evacuated residents have been temporarily housed in two government facilities and are receiving food and medical assistance, he said.
Authorities are also closely monitoring water levels in the Erzen river basin to prevent further flooding and potential impacts on the nearby town of Shijak.
Durres Mayor Emiriana Sako said some residents were initially reluctant to evacuate, but worsening weather conditions made the move necessary. Emergency accommodation remains available for those affected.
