Berisha pledges opposition support for flood damage relief

TIRANA, Nov 26 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha on Wednesday pledged that the main opposition party would back any initiative aimed at addressing the damage caused by severe flooding following heavy rainfall across Albania.

Berisha raised concerns at a press conference, stating that weather and corruption were both to be blamed for the widespread destruction affecting thousands of citizens across the country.

“Weather and corruption in tandem have this week caused devastating effects on the property of hundreds and thousands of Albanians nationwide. The damage is colossal, not only to infrastructure but also to thousands of livestock, hundreds of hectares of greenhouses, and small rural infrastructure destroyed like never before,” Berisha said.

He criticised the state of drainage systems, claiming that channels were blocked and neglected due to mismanagement and embezzlement of maintenance funds. Berisha also cited landslides along key routes, including Qukës-Qafë Plloçë, Kardhiq-Delvinë, Rruga e Arbrit, and Korçë-Ersekë, as a consequence of inadequate reinforcements.

Berisha argued that older and more costly roads had fared better due to better construction practices, describing current failures as “terrible and unimaginable theft” in public works spending.

He condemned what he described as the government’s irresponsible handling of the crisis and said DP and its parliamentary group would take all necessary steps to ensure urgent support and full compensation for flood-related damages.
