Parliamentary Investigative Committees are tools to promote transparency

TIRANA, Nov 1 /ATA/ — The Democratic Party held a parliamentary group meeting today following the Assembly’s rejection of two requests to set up investigative committees on the May 11 elections and the ‘McGonigal’ affair.

Gazment Bardhi, head of the DP parliamentary group, condemned the decision, saying, “Edi Rama’s refusal to allow the opposition to form these Investigative Committees on the electoral farce of May 11 and the personal affair involving ‘McGonigal’ is an unconstitutional move that undermines one of the Assembly’s fundamental functions — parliamentary oversight.”

He accused Edi Rama of “undermining not only the opposition’s constitutional rights but also the very foundations of parliamentarism.”

In a social media post, Bardhi emphasized that parliamentary Investigative Committees are meant to ensure transparency, not serve as tools for political obstruction.

“We are demanding the same standards that every EU country upholds, nothing more. European integration is not a ceremony in Brussels; it is about stamping out corruption within the government in Tirana. Albania cannot project a European image while maintaining African-level standards. The Parliament should not serve as a platform for government propaganda, but as a place where the opposition exercises oversight, demands accountability, and holds those responsible to account. The opposition will never become an ornament for a group that, after destroying free and fair elections, now seeks to undermine Parliament itself,” Bardhi declared.
