Berisha: Opposition’s backing for electoral reform based on OSCE/ODIHR recommendations

TIRANA, Oct 27 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Monday that the main opposition party voted in favour of setting up two parliamentary committees – on electoral reform and administrative-territorial reform – to address the “endless series of OSCE/ODIHR recommendations,” which he described as important and constructive.

“The OSCE/ODIHR has done an extraordinary job, and in its latest report it definitively branded the May 11 elections as a disgraceful electoral farce,” he said.

“In this context, we feel obliged to turn their correct orientations and recommendations into law,” Berisha added.

As for the second committee, he said the territorial reform had been “an anti-reform that established maximum inequality.”

“To illustrate, Gjirokastër district, with 120,000 residents, has seven administrative units, while Tirana, with more than one million residents, has only four,” he said. “We will do everything possible to eliminate these injustices, with the support of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.”

Berisha added that only the will of the people could restore free voting in Albania.

“It is the opposition’s effort that will return the vote to the Albanian citizens,” he said.
