Berisha: Dumani, defense lawyer for nation’s largest thefts

TIRANA, Oct 27 /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, in his address to the Parliament, accused the government of mismanagement and corruption, emphasizing that Albanian citizens have been severely harmed by unjust decisions.

On a range of corruption cases, Berisha alleged that the government faces no investigation because it is effectively shielded by SPAK chief prosecutor Altin Dumani.

He focused on the case of the CEZ company, claiming that Albanians have lost more than 630 million euros. Berisha also referred to the incinerator funds, which he said amount to 400 million euros but, in reality, can no longer be traced.

“All these sums, totalling around 1 billion euros, are equivalent to doubling pensions and salaries. Altin Dumani didn’t steal this money himself, but he acts as the lawyer for some of the biggest scandals in the country’s history,” Berisha said.

Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha accused SPAK of failing to investigate major issues, including energy sales, infrastructure projects, and international cases such as ARUBA and McGonigal. He reiterated his stance that SPAK chief prosecutor Altin Dumani is an enemy of the opposition and claimed that the justice system’s independence has continued to deteriorate.

“The figures show Albania’s decline in the Rule of Law index according to the World Justice Project, from 52nd place in 2015 to 89th in 2024. In terms of law enforcement, Albania ranked 86th in 2015 and 114th in 2024. For civil rights, it was 55th in 2015 and 101st in 2024. Regarding government interference in criminal justice, Albania ranked 62nd in 2015 and 106th in 2024,” Berisha said.
