TIRANA, Aug 28 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama remarked, “We are the only country in Europe where junkyards are legalized without any law in place.”
Speaking at a meeting on the Integrated Waste Management Reform, featuring a dedicated package of legal and investment measures, Prime Minister Edi Rama said, “We have made noticeable progress in cleaning, especially in keeping the country and its beaches clean during the season, and in waste management, we have taken big steps forward compared to when this effort began, at a time when the concept of ‘waste management’ was inexistent.”
Rama emphasized, “We are lagging behind in waste separation at source and extended producer responsibility, covering plastic packaging, paper, glass, electrical and electronic devices, batteries, and end-of-life vehicles. We are the only country in Europe where junkyards exist legally without any law, relying solely on the consent of Maliq. This operation has just begun and will continue until all these junkyards are cleared.”
The Prime Minister highlighted that “we are still a country without any reporting or financial obligations for producers, distributors, and importers concerning what I mentioned—how these materials are managed once they have served their purpose as packaging, electrical equipment, batteries, or vehicles.”
