Working Group to Tackle Irrigation Issues in Myzeqe

TIRANA, Aug 4 /ATA/ A working group composed of representatives from government institutions, experts, and investors has started working to address the challenges related to the management of Lake Thana, a vital resource for Myzeqe.

Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Anila Denaj, this group’s goal is to develop a comprehensive water management plan and address irrigation challenges in this key agricultural region.

“Lake Thana has played a crucial role in advancing agriculture in Myzeqe. Over the past few years, the cultivated area has tripled, significantly boosting water demand. Moreover, the operation of two key hydropower plants in the Devoll cascade, integral to Albania’s energy system, has created new challenges for managing water resources, necessitating enhanced coordination between the energy and agricultural sectors,” Balluku remarked during the discussions.

The meeting aimed to develop an intervention calendar that will enable more efficient water management, as well as sustainable support for the agriculture sector.
The participants emphasized the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure sustainable development.
