German Ambassador visits archaeological summer school in Pogradec

TIRANA, August 4 /ATA/  – The German Ambassador to Albania, Karl Bergner, visited last week an archaeological summer school in the resort town of Pogradec, southeast Albania, attended by students and academic staff from Albania, Germany, the USA, North Macedonia, Türkiye, and China.

The German Embassy in Tirana emphasized the impressive commitment and enthusiasm of the participants.

At the same time, the Embassy highlighted that the school is a fine example of how scientific cooperation can contribute to mutual understanding among peoples.

During the Neolithic period (the theme of the summer school), borders had little significance; instead, cross-border trade networks (often spanning thousands of kilometers) were key.

Findings from the excavations vividly demonstrate the important role the Korça basin played during the Neolithic period.

The summer school is a joint project between the University of Cologne, the University of Tirana, Goce Delčev University of Štip (North Macedonia), and the Institute of Archaeology at the Albanian Academy of Sciences.

It supports the work of the “Korça Regional Neolithic Project,” a partnership between the Institute of Archaeology at the Albanian Academy of Sciences, the University of Cologne, and the University at Buffalo.
