Bufi: Project for production of heating pellets through composting

TIRANA, June 13/ATA/ Albanian government, in cooperation with the German government, through the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has supported several municipalities in the country, including the municipality of Roskovec, to build composting fields that enable the treatment of green waste from farms, greenhouses and organic waste from families.

Mayor of Roskovec Majlinda Bufi stated that in this field there is carried out not only the collection of cardboard and paper, but the sale of this product that brings more revenues to this municipality.

“We also collect green waste, which has increased in the territory of Roskovec not only because it is a rural and urban area, but also because there is an increased service in agricultural areas. Almost 300 hectares are greenhouses, so through the process of composting plant waste we manage to produce organic fertilizer, which we use today to meet the needs of the municipality”, said Bufi.

According to Bufi, these are some of the processes that are being carried out today in Roskovec, thanks to the cooperation and support of GiZ.

“We are in a public hearing to approve the urban waste strategy that is produced in a certain territory. We want to add another important thing. Some trunks and branches come out that cannot be composted and this requires another process. We have olive processing, there are 450 thousand olive roots, but we want to use the branches and trunks to produce pellets that are used for heating in schools. So that the municipality of Roskovec no longer spends money on purchasing heating pellets,” she said.

Through composting, the volume of waste managed by the municipality is reduced, and at the same time the municipality creates income through the sale of the organic fertilizer that is created.

The circular economy is an economic system that aims to minimize waste through the continuous use of resources. In a circular economy, waste is minimized and resources are used more economically, in the long term, through their reuse, repair and recycling. /e.i/a.f/p.s./
