PM Rama shares images of newly-restored Tirana Mosaic

TIRANA, March 19 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Wednesday afternoon to share images of the newly-restored Tirana Mosaic, a notable archaeological site in Albania’s capital, saying the site has now become an important attraction for both local and foreign visitors.

Restoration of the he Tirana Mosaic was designed to feature a platform to exhibit mosaics dating back to antiquity and late antiquity, preserved in our most important sites such as Apolonia, Butrint, Bylis, Durrës, Elbasan, and many other sites, given that they remain covered to be protected from the elements.

The site has been also designed to serve as an innovation and education centre for kids.

The mosaic is believed to have been part of a 3rd-century Roman house, referred to by local archaeologists as the ‘Villa rustica’. Later, in the 5th and 6th centuries, a Paleo-Christian Basilica was built around this site. The ruins of ancient building were unearthed during excavation works for construction of “Partizani” residential complex in 1971. The site was declared a cultural monument of the first category in June 1973.

The site offers a window into ancient Roman and Byzantine times. Some of the ancient mosaics discovered at the site that feature diverse geometrical patterns and depict poultry and fish.
