TIRANA, Jan 10 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has voiced support for legal amendments aimed at enabling Albanian expats to vote in the May 11 general elections, enhancing electoral inclusivity and transparency, adding that negotiations are underway among political parties.
“We have publicly pledged to support any reasonable request that help transparency and enable diaspora vote. We will support even legal changes, if necessary,” the head of the main opposition party stated in a press conference on Friday.
Berisha said that the opposition will insist on pre-electoral coalitions, but the diaspora vote is DP’s top priority.
“The issue of pre-electoral coalitions will be subject to discussions, but I can’t state this is would be the opposition’s prerequisite, because we have prioritized the diaspora vote. We are committed to making any efforts that serve electoral transparency,” Berisha said.
He also said that the main opposition Democratic Party will soon launch the primaries and caucuses to pick the DP candidates in the upcoming general elections, and announced that a series of meetings will take place with Albanian migrants in Greece, Italy and other countries.
Berisha also pledged to significantly cut electricity prices for household consumers should DP wins parliamentary elections in May 11.
