Tirana to make public transport free for pensioners starting January 1, 2025

TIRANA, Dec 18 /ATA/ – Pensioners in the Albanian capital will be able to travel for free on all urban bus lines starting from January 1, 2025.

Tirana Municipality will make public transport free for retired people, fully subsidizing their tickets for the city’s buses, as it has been doing for university students for years now.

All eligible pensioners- women aged 60 and over, and men aged 65 and over – will travel for free, Mayor Veliaj said Wednesday, calling on them to report and register with the administrative units where they live so that they can obtain monthly transport subscriptions.

In addition, students with a valid Student Card will continue to travel for free on Tirana’s public transport system.

“Under the 2025 municipal budget, we will subsidize 100% the value of the monthly transport subscriptions for retired people. I can’t provide an accurate figure, because we don’t know for sure the number of pensioners who will be using this service. We will report on monthly basis on the number of pensioners using public transport in Tirana,” Mayor Veliaj said at today’s City Council meeting.
