TIRANA, Nov 20 /ATA/ A roundtable was held today in Berat with the National Waste Economy Agency (AKEM), representatives of the German Development Bank (KFW), and the municipalities of the Berat district. It focused on the steps for implementing the urban waste project in the region.
The Mayor of Berat, Ervin Demo, said that “at the beginning of the project implementation phase, we coordinated steps between the implementing partners.”
“This project will enable the construction of infrastructure for waste management in compliance with EU standards, such as a regional landfill, equipment and machinery for cleaning, collecting, and treating urban waste, as well as technical support for municipal staff,” emphasized Demo.
The project is financed by the Albanian government under the agreement with KFW and a grant from the Swiss government, via SECO.
Meanwhile, the conference “Sustainable Climate-Friendly Waste Management” held in Tirana launched the joint program of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the German Development Bank (KfW), and the Swiss Cooperation (SECO) on sustainable waste management. The program is coordinated and monitored by the National Waste Economy Agency.
This €66 million program ensures significant investments in the integrated waste management infrastructure in Durrës, Dibër, Korça, Berat, and Vlora North, including urban waste landfills according to European standards, landfills for inert waste, transfer stations, waste sorting plants, composting centers, and investments in machinery for differentiated waste collection, with the goal of reducing the amount of waste at final disposal points by 20% through recycling processes.
