TIRANA, Sept 9 /ATA/ – The Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) sought house arrest for the Mayor of Tropoje Rexhe Byberi and his deputy Abedin Kërrnaja, while awaiting trial on corruption charges.
The Mayor of the northern Albania municipality of Tropoje and his deputy face charges of abuse of office and destruction of property related to a road construction project that reportedly fell short of legal and environmental standards.
SPAK had launched an investigation following evidence of significant mismanagement and financial damage.
As a result, Byberi and Kërrnaja have been placed under house arrest while the case proceeds.
