TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku called for a fairer distribution of wealth and public funds and tougher fight against corruption in Albania.
In a post on the social media, Tabaku claimed “Albanian agriculture is not growing, while farmers across the country are experiencing crisis due short-sighted economic vision and policies pursued by the Socialists.”
According to the opposition lawmaker, “the country’s agriculture is in a lamentable state because of such policies and a system that levies taxes on work, instead of supporting hardworking people, and launches tenders and concessionary contracts that fail to deliver economic growth.”
“This is the peak season for agriculture and product boom as farmers should harvest their crops. But Albanian agriculture is registering zero exports and 0% growth, which has remained unchanged in the last three years, while the EU-funded IPARD programme has been suspended, reflecting a corruption system in this sector,” Tabaku stated.
According to her, “what is happening with IPARD funds is the best indicator of the Socialist government; corruption and misuse of EU funds, corruption with tender procedures and concessionary contracts. It is time for this system to change. It is time not only for better distribution of public money, but also for a stronger fight against corruption that would allow growth in key sectors of the country’s economy,” Tabaku concluded.
