PM Rama: Public consultation process to begin on management plan for Vjosa National Park

TIRANA, May 20 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama announced Monday that a public consultation process will be launched on management plan on Vjosa Wild River National Park.

The government head underlined that the consultation process is an important step towards building an effectively conserved and managed Vjosa National Park.

“Another important step will be launched towards management and protection of Vjosa River, the last wild river in Europe, as the Management Plan of the National Park has been already drafted after a meticulous and intense work by the National Agency of Protected Areas, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the plan is now ready to undergo public consultation process,” PM Rama said in a post on the social media.

Rama reiterated the exceptional ecological importance of the Vjosa River, spanning 480 kilometers and covering 12,000 hectares. He clarified any misconceptions regarding the river’s protection status, asserting that it holds dual protection as part of both the Vjosa River National Park and the Protected Landscape of Pishë Poro-Nartë.

“Public consultations will be held in the cities of Fier, Vlora and Gjirokaster on May 22 and 23,” Rama added.

Vjosa was declared a National Park (Category II protected areas) last year on the basis of which the 272 kilometres long Vjosa-Aoös River, from its source to the flow into the sea, including its branches and tributaries, is granted complete national and cross-border protection in accordance with the highest international standards and it is effectively preserved as a free-flowing and living river for the benefit of the people and the nature n Albania, Greece and whole world.
