TIRANA, Oct 24 /ATA/ – The Special Court against Corruption and Organised Crime in Tirana decided Tuesday to postpone hearing against former Prime Minister and chairman of the Democratic Party’s Reestablishment faction Sali Berisha for Wednesday.
“The court hearing is postponed for tomorrow, on Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m., after lawyers demanded more time to examine the charges,” the Court said.
Albania’s ex- Prime Minister Sali Berisha failed to report in the Special Court to be questioned in relation to the privatization of a land owned by the country’s Defense Ministry earlier today.
The defense team of the former PM filed a lawsuit and demanded that the judge Irena Gjoka be excluded, claiming that she had violated the country’s Constitution by making a decision without waiting for the Parliament procedures to complete first.
Two days ago, the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime office (SPAK) unveiled two days ago the passive corruption charges against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the money laundering charges levelled against his son-in-law, Jamarber Malltezi in connection of a land deal and the privatization of the area in Tirana called “Kompleksi Partizani”, former sports ground and other multisport facilities belonging to Partizani football club.
SPAK said that Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Court ruled that ex-PM Berisha is banned from leaving the country and under an order that obliges him to report his presence in the judicial police.
Court has ordered that Jamarbër Malltezi be remanded into custody and to await trial under corruption and money laundering charges.
