Rama: Kosovo risks losing historic chance given by Franco-German plan

TIRANA, October 12 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated in the Assembly that Kosovo is at risk of losing the historic chance given by the Franco-German plan, to make an extraordinary, more meaningful progress in the diplomatic war with Serbia.

During the debate in the Assembly for Kosovo, Rama said that while it is not making the association, it is losing day by day the trust and respect of those who recognized it as an independent state and who are committed to lead it towards its final recognition as an independent Republic of the great community of UN states.

“While it is becoming a fait accompli and the association is mystified every day as if it was a Trojan horse that the strategic allies are trying to trick into Prishtina, I say, it will immediately turn into a rope at the feet of Serbia. If the association is done properly, in close cooperation with our allies, Serbia will not be able to move as freely as it has moved all this time between Brussels and Washington, exploiting the wrong approach of Prishtina in the dialogue process and pointing at it in every case while considering itself as a victim. The rejection of an association of municipalities which is locked within the constitutional framework of the Republic of Kosovo has a completely unreasonable price, while it would be stripped of any potential threat to destabilize the state of Kosovo”, he added.

Rama recalled that the former US president Clinton also asked for this when he came to Tirana.

“President Clinton told me: ‘Tell my friends in Prishtina not to miss the great chance of agreement on the Franco-German plan. Tell them how Yasser Arafat missed a golden opportunity for peace when he had on his Oval Office desk the best agreement ever written for the final settlement of that conflict just weeks before I left the White House. The Israelis said yes, we will sign it. Even Yasser Arafat said yes, he will sign it. I ordered preparations to begin organizing the decades-long awaited ceremony. The next day, Arafat called me and said, “Mr. President, you have done what no one has done for Palestine and the agreement is the best possible, but I cannot sign it,” said Rama.

Further on, while quoting Clinton, the prime minister said that he requested that Kosovo not only should not disappoint its friends of the most difficult days, but should work together with them to make peace. And finalizing peace requires even more courage than starting war.”

In this regard, Rama said that what is happening today between Palestine and Israel is the most terrible escalation of a human tragedy, produced by the fear of the political leadership to make peace with the historical enemy. “That’s the point”, he concluded./p.s./
