U.S. Ambassador: Banjska attack responsibility doesn`t end with Radojicic`s statement

PRISTINA, Oct 4 /ATA/ – The United States Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, stated Wednesday that the responsibility for the attack on the Kosovo Police in Banjska, Zveçan municipality, does not end with the statement by the former vice-chairman of the Serbian List, Milan Radoicic, who claimed to be the alleged mastermind behind the attack.

“I would say the trying to figure out what has happened is right thing to do for our security services and other partners. The United States has been clear; those responsible for the attack must be held accountable. This remains our position. We will continue to try to understand what happened, who is responsible, and why,” Hovenier told reporters at the U.S. Embassy in Pristina.

Kosovo Police officer Afrim Bunjaku was killed, and three Serbian attackers were also killed in the exchange of fire that ensued in the Sept. 24 attack.

On September 29, Millan Radoicic took responsibility for organizing the attack in Banjska, in the north of Kosovo.

He was questioned by Serbian authorities a day ago and he was released earlier today.

A Serbian court banned him from travelling to Kosovo.

Asked if the US had information about the armed group’s plans and whether official Belgrade was involved in the attacks in any way, Hovenier said the US was still learning more about the case.

“This would take time. It has been a complicated situation and it will take time until we understand all the specifics,” he said.

However, Hovenier reiterated that the U.S. believes the attack was not spontaneous and was “coordinated” by the group, using sophisticated weapons wearing military and wearing military fatigues – much of which was of Serbian origin – to destabilize the north of Kosovo.
