TIRANA, Sept 21 /ATA/ The General Directorate of Archives has published some photos of the Pojan monastery taken on September 21, 1940.
Located on the ruins of Apollonia, the Pojan monastery is a symbol of cultural and historical development. It dates from the 13th century, belongs to the Byzantine style and is conceived as an architectural compound, which is decorated with murals. It also houses a church with an unusual interior space. The last intervention in the monastery was made around 1916-1918 by the Austro-Italian war missions.
Whereas, nearly 30 years ago, the monastery was converted into a museum to preserve the statues belonging to the Illyrian-Hellenic and Roman periods.
This is how the monastery of Pojan began to serve as a rich artistic and cultural center. In addition to the photos, GDA shared the correspondence between the Presidency of the Orthodox Church and the Episcopal See of Fier, regarding the preservation of some paintings of archaeological value in the Monastery of Pojan. It also published photos of the Pojan monastery found in the fund of the French archaeologist, Leon Rey.
