Peach: Actions of Kosovo Government, unwise

PRISTINA, May 31 /ATA/ The UK special envoy for the Western Balkans, Stuart Peach, has said that the action of the Government of Kosovo to impose the mayors in the municipal buildings in the north by force is unwise.

According to him, this decision has had damaging consequences.
Lord Peach’s statement was published by the United Kingdom Embassy in Pristina.

It says that, in addition to Prime Minister Kurti, Peach also met the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Donika Gërvalla, the Minister of Defense, Armend Mehaj, KFOR and the US Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier.

He stated that his visit to Kosovo comes at a serious time.

“In the meetings with the government, I delivered a very clear message: the action of the Government of Kosovo to install the mayors in the municipal buildings by force, was unwise and had damaging consequences. There is a need for all parties to de-escalate now,” said the British envoy.

He emphasized that the United Kingdom will continue to stand by Kosovo, but according to him, unilateral actions will make this more difficult.

“I have been following events closely and talking to counterparts in Washington, Brussels and beyond. Those conversations have made it clear to me that recent events have caused damage to the international image of Kosovo and its reputation with its allies. The United Kingdom has stood by Kosovo in the best and worst of times, as a friend and supporter and will continue to do so, but unilateral actions will only make this even more difficult,” said Peach./ KosovaPress/sm/
