TIRANA, May 14 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – Central Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi stated that there were no legal reasons to extend voting and for the polling stations to remain open after 7 p.m. in Albania’s local elections on Sunday.
However, in a press statement, Celibashi explained that if there are voters in a polling station after the official deadline, the election commission at that station should record their names and allow them to cast their ballot.
“No other polling station will remain open after the voting process completes, except for the cases when people are there waiting to vote at 7 p.m.” he said.
According to the head of the central election commission, the voter turnout in 4497 polling stations across the country is 31.42%.
Celibashi noted that the low number of reports over irregularities show that the process went well.
“However, the media reports suggest that there are some problems. In my opinion, the process as a whole can be considered normal, and I don’t think the identified irregularities make the whole process problematic,” he said.
