OSCE Presence launches project on training capacities to combat human trafficking

TIRANA, Oct 12 /ATA/ – The OSCE Presence in Albania unveiled Wednesday its newest project designed to improve training capacities of the School of Magistrates  and the Security Academy in order to upgrade the skills of judges to identify and prosecute human traffickers.

The project funded by the governments of the United States of America, Norway and Italy, aims to support Albanian institutions to provide regular, specialized and sustainable training programs for relevant law enforcement units by sector, as well as for judges and prosecutors, to identify and properly support victims, as well as equal law enforcement depending on the level of seriousness of the criminal offense.

“This project comes at an essential moment for the Albanian criminal justice system. With a new generation of criminal justice professionals and law enforcement personnel, it is very important that they are not only trained in this field, but also develop institutional resources to be kept updated with legal changes and practices,” Ambassador Vincenzo Del Monaco, Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, said in his opening remarks.

Del Monaco added that more should be done in terms of law enforcement commitment, social and judicial institutions, as well as the international community.

“No country is immune from human trafficking. However, it is possible to take steps to prevent and limit this crime,” he said.

The OSCE Presence will soon support the Albanian institutions, especially the Ministry of the Interior, to analyze the necessary financial, human, material or political resources so that the law enforcement bodies, prosecution and judiciary carry out their duties against human trafficking.
