PM Rama: It would be huge mistake if North Macedonia rejects Macron proposal

TIRANA, July 4 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated in a televised interview on Sunday that it would be a huge mistake if North Macedonia were to turn down the latest proposal tabled by French President Emanuel Macron to tackle the impasse with Bulgaria.

In an interview for Skopje-based Kanal 5 TV, PM Rama called on North Macedonia’s leaders to accept Macron proposal that clears the way to the EU accession negotiations for both Tirana and Skopje.

“I have followed all the hard work that has been done especially in Madrid to accommodate North Macedonia’s concerns and I can tell you that President Macron has put all his weight and influence, working 48 hours, day and night, and thanks to my very good relations with him, as well as thanks to Bujar Osmani who was amazing in his patience, resistance and stubbornness, the new proposal – which is also the final one, and everyone has to understand that it is the final one – has been already forwarded and I strongly believe that the time is high and it is absolutely the time to give the proposal a go and open this door,” PM Rama said.

The government head clarified that he was not asking his North Macedonia counterpart to accept the proposal because Albania would otherwise encounter difficulties on its EU integration path.

“Albania has already overcome the point where it can march alone and we will certainly ask to decouple if North Macedonia refuses the proposal, but I think the country will accept it, because this is the final proposal and North Macedonia has no reason to stay 17 more years in front of this door,” he said.
