Walker: Recak holds a special place in my heart

PRISTINA, Jan 15 /ATA/- The former head of the OSCE mission during the war in Kosovo, Ambassador William Walker, paid tribute to the victims of Recak 23 years ago, saying that every year since 1999, the importance of what happened in Recak has increased.

In a video message at the academy dedicated to the Recak massacre, Walker said he would never forget what happened 23 years ago.

On the 23rd anniversary of the Recak massacre, the three state leaders declared that the massacre in this village is a crucial date for Kosovo’s history.

“Every year since 1999, the importance of what happened in Recak has increased. Recak holds a very special place in my heart. In recent years, every year the January 15 ceremony has been closely followed first by people from Kosovo and finally by the whole world. This is what I hoped for. It has been commemorated in the past by people from Kosovo, but not by embassies, but that has now changed. I will never forget that whenever I have returned during these 22 years I have seen the recovery of this country. Recak has not changed tremendously from what I have seen. I will never forget what Recak means,” Walker said.

Whereas, the President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani said that 23 years ago, the world was horrified and finally understood from the images the crime that was happening in Kosovo.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that on January 15, 1999, this crime echoed across the world.

“Denial of genocide is the last stage of genocide. Denial kills the dignity of survivors and seeks to destroy the memory of the crime. We are against revenge and refuse to forget what happened,” he said.
