Endangered species, sea turtle rescued at Patoku lagoon

TIRANA, September 21/ATA/ The Administration of Protected Areas of Lezha shared today in the social media moments from the rescue of a sea turtle that had stuck in the net of fishermen.

The Lezha Protected Areas Administration together with the staff of HAS (Herpetofauna Albanian Society) received a report of a sea turtle (Caretta caretta) which was trapped in nets in the Patoku lagoon.

“Immediately after receiving the report, we went to the area to rescue the turtle, which was taken to the Sea Turtle First Aid Centre in Patok. After its rehabilitation, this turtle was marked and released back into the sea,” the statement said.

For years, experts have launched a study project on nesting of sea turtles on the Albanian and Mediterranean coasts, in terms of many factors that endanger their survival.

Sea turtles are very old species, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs and have managed to survive to the present day.

In the Mediterranean Sea one meets three of their seven species – Caretta caretta Chelonia mydas and very rarely Dermochelys coriacea. In addition to climate change, their survival is endangered due to urbanization and uncontrolled construction of coastal areas, fishing or pollution.

A very important role in the study and conservation of their habitat has been played by the MEDASSET organization, active since 1983 and now based in Greece. /j.p/p.s./
