TIRANA, June 28 /ATA/ – By B. Naska/ After the restoration of the roof in the St. Mary’s church of Maligrad, the work for the preservation of this monument’s values is ongoing.
The news was announced by Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, who emphasizes that this destination is worth a visit if you go to Pogradec or Korça.
“St. Mary’s Church of Maligrad, one of the most beautiful tourist attractions which is worth a visit in every season, is surrounded by the waters of Prespa and the lush vegetation. After the restoration of the church roof, Regional Agency for Protected Zones together with the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Korça continue the work for the preservation of the values of this monument. If you go to Pogradec or Korça, come back and enjoy the rare frescoes and the wild vegetation of the island. “An adventure worth trying”, says Margariti.
The excavations on this island have found objects such as tiles, columns and capitals which, according to archaeologists, belong to a Paleo-Christian church thought to have been in the upper part of the lake.
Above this island lie the ruins of the summer villa of Tsar Simeon that dates back to the 11th century. The Church of St. Mary is an old foundation and has served as a spiritual center for Albanian leaders.
The inscriptions on this church belong to different periods of its history. An inscription on the south side, the earliest in this church belongs to 1345 and the first phase of its decoration with frescoes.
