TIRANA, December 11 /ATA/ The State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi participated in the roundtable on implementation of the decriminalization law so far and the challenges of its implementation in the 2021 Parliamentary elections.
The roundtable was organized by the OSCE Presence in Albania and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with the participation of senior officials of the CEC, the General Prosecutor’s Office, other institutions, representatives of political parties, civil society and international partners, closely following the implementation of the decriminalization law.
Commissioner Celibashi said that, “The decriminalization law actually answers the dilemma of whether an individual with a criminal record can be a representative of the people in a democratic system.”
The CEC and the General Prosecutor’s Office shared the experience and challenges encountered in law enforcement in the field of elections over the years.
Participants agreed that the decriminalization law has achieved significant results since its adoption in 2015, which has led to the dismissal or resignation of a significant number of elected officials, such as MPs, mayors and members of municipal councils. /j.p/r.e/p.s./
