TIRANA, Oct 26 /ATA/ President of the Republic Ilir Meta published today the request addressed to the Venice Commission for “an urgent opinion on the process of unilateral and fast-track change of the Electoral Code.
Earlier in a press conference, the President stated that he had sent 8 opinion questions to the Venice Commission regarding the changes to the Electoral Code.
Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi responded by saying he “believes the Venice Commission will provide swift advice to the parties of interest and that parliament should consider waiting for a re-vote to take this advice into account.”
“Albania’s Electoral Code: I trust that the Venice Commission will provide prompt advice to stakeholders in Albania on the implementation of the July 30 Constitutional amendments. Parliament should consider these tips before re-voting. “I cannot wait to see free and fair elections in April 2021,” writes Varhelyi.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama reminded that “the opinion of Venice is always welcome, but for a law voted and dismissed by the President, the procedure is clear: The refusal of the President is accepted or rejected by parliament.”
The Prime Minister stressed that “the parliament will re-express itself without losing a single day.”
“This President committed as an extremist against the Albanian Parliament and Government, cannot hold anyone and anything to ransom except for the institution that unfortunately has already taken! “Venice’s opinion is welcomed when it comes, but the time for these elections does not wait for a single day beyond the procedures”, said Rama.
