Justice Minister: Right to protest is guaranteed, violence carries legal consequences

TIRANA, Oct 24 /ATA/ – Justice Minister Toni Gogu on Saturday urged young people to exercise their right to protest within the law, stressing that the right is guaranteed but does not justify acts of violence.

In a social media post, Gogu highlighted the importance of respecting the law during protests, warning that involvement in violent acts could result in criminal liability.

“The right to protest is guaranteed. Violence is not part of it. Involvement in acts of violence may lead to criminal liability. The Centre for the Prevention of Juvenile and Youth Crime (QPKMR) raises young people’s awareness of their responsibilities and the legal consequences. Let us defend our rights while respecting the law,” the justice minister wrote.

In a video shared on social media by Gogu, Elsa Salillari, head of a section at the Centre for the Prevention of Juvenile and Youth Crime, said that exercising the right to protest does not exempt individuals from responsibility for their actions.

“Exercising the right to protest does not remove individual responsibility for acts that constitute criminal offences under the legislation in force. Violence and other acts punishable under the Criminal Code carry legal consequences,” she said.
