“Kallënga e Poros” in Vlora has transformed into a haven for flamingos

TIRANA, Aug 29 /ATA/ “Kallënga e Poros”, 25 km northwest of Vlora city, has become the destination of flamingos, playful birds that attract visitors with their pirouettes.

After the rehabilitation of “Kallëngë,” this heaven on the blessed land of Vlora, which from a dry (salt) area has turned into a real lagoon with concrete investments in this area.

The prefect of Vlora region, Flamur Mamaj, told ATA that “the rehabilitation of this area has enabled the return of birds and all wildlife that populated the area before ’97. This was made possible by the company AlbLigatina, which has made investments to restore the fauna to its origin. ”

“This area must be protected from illegal interventions so that the endangered species will not migrate anymore,” said Mamaj.

Mayor Mamaj said that “the pine forest belt bordering this coast makes it unique for the values and the assets. This is also reflected in the variety of wild birds, such as waterfowl and goose. The terrain with abundant natural resources is home to a variety of fauna and flora, according to biologists and environmentalists appreciate.

Flamingos have become an attraction for the tourism of bird-watching in their natural habitats.

Flamingos are very social birds; they live in colonies whose population can number in the thousands. These large colonies are believed to serve three purposes for the flamingos: avoiding predators, maximizing food intake, and using scarcely suitable nesting sites more efficiently. Before breeding, flamingo colonies split into breeding groups of about 15 to 50 birds. Both males and females in these groups perform synchronized ritual displays. The members of a group stand together and display to each other by stretching their necks upwards, then uttering calls while head-flagging, and then flapping their wings. The displays do not seem directed towards an individual, but occur randomly. These displays stimulate “synchronous nesting” and help pair up those birds that do not already have mates.
