TIRANA, July 23 /ATA/ – Albanian Parliament passed changes to the country’s Electoral Code on Thursday, granting the right to vote for Albanian citizens living abroad.
The Ministry of the Diaspora said today that thanks to the changes to the electoral legislation, Albanian nationals living and working abroad will now be granted the right to vote in elections just like any other citizen living in Albania.
The changes are a product of the consensus between the governing majority and the opposition in the Political Council, a working group tasked with developing the Electoral Reform in Albania.
The adopted amendments to the Electoral Code assign the Central Election Commission as the body responsible for directing and supervising the process of voting from abroad in the upcoming elections for the Albanian Parliament.
The amendments to the Electoral Code include the right to vote for voters with permanent residence outside the territory of the Republic of Albania, but who are registered in the National Civil Registry.
Pursuant to the amendments to the Electoral Code, voting from abroad will be organized and administered by the Central Election Commission. The election body will decide on the system of voting rules and procedures.
The voting of citizens living abroad will be administered by the Central Election Commission, guaranteeing the integrity and the secrecy of the ballot, from any interference with the ballot papers or the electronic voting information.
