Finland, unsparing support for opening of EU accession talks

TIRANA, Oct 2 /ATA/- Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj, at a joint news conference with his Finnish counterpart, Pekka Haavisto, has declared that Finland in its capacity as the holder of EU presidency, has provided unsparing support for opening of EU accession talks with Albania.

“The visit of minister Havisto is of high importance due to the circumstances and its timing. This visit comes in the frame of an intensive communication between the minister and all countries of the Western Balkans in general, but also a few weeks before the much-anticipated decision on opening of accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia. Given that the enlargement process is high on agenda of the Finnish Presidency of EU Council, most of discussions today focused on arguments and reasons why Albania should open accession talks in October this year. First and foremost, this decision is a reflection of merits and achievements of Albania,” Cakaj said.

“Finland as an EU member but also as the country holding the Council Presidency confirms its support for opening of accession talks with Albania in October and also further commitment to work with member countries in lobbying them that ahead of us lies a critical moment, Albania’s assessment should be merit based and pro-European momentum should be maintained in the region.”
