EU rejects DP proposal for special ad hoc structure on electoral reform

TIRANA, Sept 30 /ATA/ – The European Union has rejected a proposal tabled by the opposition Democratic Party, suggesting that a special ad hoc body becomes part of the electoral reform in Albania.

The Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maja Kocijancic told local Albanian media on Monday that the EU cannot involve in this matter, while appealing for dialogue between the political sides in the country.

“It is not up to the EU to define or make comments on the structure that should act to facilitate consultations and then the Electoral Reform. The EU reiterates the need for all political players to contribute through constructive dialogue and take work in electoral reform forward,” Kocijancic said.

The head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Bernd Borschard, had turned down the proposal that DP forwarded during a roundtable with representatives of political parties and civil society last week.

During the meeting, the DP representative Ivi Kaso proposed that a special structure, comprising also international representatives, be set up in order to finalize an electoral reform in the country.
