TIRANA, September 20/ATA/- The European Union will continue to support Albania and its citizens in their efforts to fully meet EU statistical standards, the EU Ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca stated Friday during a conference on “Population and Housing Census 2020 in Albania”.
In his speech, the Ambassador Soreca stated that, “the Council of Europe has emphasized that the 2011 census in Albania failed to secure the rights of Albanian citizens to freely and voluntarily declare their ethnic origin and their religious faith.”
In view of the fact of the ongoing debate in Parliament on the new law on census, Soreca underlined that,“the census is closely linked to the adoption of sub-laws on the right to self-identification voluntarily and freely.”
“There is still work to be done in Albania in r to achieve reliability of statistical data,” Soreca said.
According to the Eu Ambassador Soreca, the census is also important for Albania’s future and the EU integration process.//a.i/
