President calls for peaceful, non-violent opposition protest

TIRANA, June 21 /ATA/ – Albanian President Ilir Meta called Friday for a peaceful protest as the coalition opposition is holding a fresh rally in Tirana.

“It is crucially important that the today’s protest called by the coalition opposition be completely peaceful and away from any action of violence,” President Meta said in a statement.

The head of state says that the right to protest is a fundamental right and vital to democracy.

“President Meta stresses the importance that today’s protest of the united opposition be completely peaceful, away from any act of violence, and calls on the protesters to show self-restraint and focus on the cause for free and fair elections,” the statement read.

“The President of the Republic believes that a solution to the crisis would come through dialogue and cooperation only,” Meta said in his statement, adding he will continue his efforts in this direction.
