Tirana’s transforming project, work to construct first five public schools underway

TIRANA, May 5 /ATA/-By Z.Tosku/ – With the works to construct 17 new public schools in Tirana already underway, the Albanian capital will experience a true revolution with modern buildings, spacious classrooms and premises for students, sports grounds and well-equipped laboratories for a normal conduct of classes.

The new modern structures, featuring a Western infrastructural approach, completely different from the existing school buildings in Tirana, are designed to serve as the city’s cultural and social epicentres.

Ilda Qazimllari, an architect at the Foreign Investment Directorate at Tirana Municipality, told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that initial contract on construction of five new schools in zone No. 1, dedicated to pre-university education, has been signed.

“The 17 new schools are part of the public-private-partnership programme, which includes construction of several primary education school buildings as well as integrated kindergartens. Currently, the first stage contract on construction of five new public schools in zone No. 1 has been signed. There are 3 construction sites located adjacent the Agricultural University and two other sites near the “Eagle” square, or the former customs headquarters and the last site, where two new schools will be built, is located near Don Bosko neighbourhood,” Qazimllari told ATA.

She went on explaining that integrated kindergartens will be built within the new public schools. According to her, the new public schools in Tirana will tackle the 27-year-old problem of over-crowded schools or two-shift schools, serving at the same time as community-focused education institutions will be true urban squares and community centres for the neighborhoods, used by students during school hours, and by the community on weekends and holidays.
